Lady Gaga has recently admitted that she has gained 25 pounds in the past months and now comes up with an explanation. The “Born This Way” singer confessed her struggle with two of the most common eating disorders: anorexia and bulimia.
Pop diva Lady Gaga has recently confronted critics regarding her weight gain by starting a Body Revolution campaign. The singer posted two photos on her fan site, Little Monsters, showing her struggle with eating disorders. “Bulimia and Anorexia since I was 15”, Gaga writes under one picture. The photo captions that followed read: “But today I join the Body Revolution. … To Inspire Bravery. … and breed some m$therf*cking compassion.”
The pop star adds that she and her mother have put the basis of the Born This Way Foundation in order to “inspire bravery” to those struggling with eating disorders. “Be brave and celebrate with us your “perceived flaws,” as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous”, the website reads.
Eating disorders are considered forms of mental illness and, of all the psychiatric conditions, they have the highest mortality rate. This, probably because half of the people struggling with an ED also meet the criteria for depression.
In the U.S., up to 24 million people, men and women, children, adolescents and adults, suffer from an eating disorder, whether it’s anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or other.
