Alec Baldwin impersonated Donald Trump on SNL season premiere last night. The parodied version of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s first presidential debate was one of the most anticipated entertainment event this year. And the reactions to it were as expected. The show pulled it off!
It was Tina Fey’s idea to bring Alec Baldwin to Saturday Night Live as Trump. The 58-year old actor, co-starred with Fey in 30 Rock and has hosted SNL frequently. For last night’s debate, the host was Michael Che, who debuted as Lester Holt, the moderator of the political debate. Hillary Clinton was played by Kate McKinnon.
The show managed to out-comedy Donald Trump’s real performance at the debate which took place on Monday and had a huge audience: 84 million people. SNL postponed the premiere precisely so they would follow the real debate between the two nominees for presidency.
As Holt, impersonated by Che, introduces the candidates, he describes the Republican nominee as the man who is to blame “for the bottom half of all his kids’ faces”.
As the debate started, Clinton criticized her opponent’s „Trumped Up Trickle Down economics”. Trump responded „I’ve got a very presidential answer for this: Our job are fleeing this country. They’re going to Mexico. They’re going to Jina(meaning China)”. He then said Clinton doesn’t know how to solve this problem, otherwise she would have done so already. He know how to, he’s going to be Predident for that and that is that. „ End of story. I won the debate. Stayed calm, just like I promised, and it is over. Good night, Hofstra.” Of course, this was just a few minutrs into the show. When he was informed there are still 88 minutes left from the debate, Trump pretended his mic was broken and blamed Clinton for that.
Throughout the show, the candidates went at each other, each with the basic specifics of their discourse in real life which, of course, were stretched to the common sense limit by the parody. Clinton called Trump unfit to be president, a bully and accused him of misinforming people about the reality that is the climate change „He says climate change is a hoax invented by China.” „“It’s pronounced ‘Jina’”, Trump replied and then retaliated. „She’s always screaming, constantly lying. Her hair is crazy, her face is orange except around the eyes where it’s white”, he continued. „And when she stop talking her mouth looks like a tiny little butthole.”
Trump/Baldwin went even further and made racial comments about the black community in Chicago. „All the blacks live on one street in Chicago. It’s called Hell Street. And they’re all killing each other, just like I am killing this debate”, he said triumphant, leaving everyone on the set with their jaws dropped. Further in the show, Clinton started crying. „I’m sorry. This is going so well, it’s going exactly how I’d always dreamed.”
