On Tuesday’s Howard Stern Show, Sarah Jessica Parker admits that she has always felt “very affectionate” towards ex-flame, Robert Downey Jr. The two reconnected recently and Downey Jr. was invited to the Parker-Broderick home for dinner.
Having your ex-boyfriend and your husband at the same table, chatting over a glass of wine and a dinner dish is not something you hear about every day. The world of celebrities is eccentric in this regard, too, boundaries being mostly what they make, not something that is socially viable. This time, we are talking about the recent reconnection between Sex and the City alum Sarah Jessica Parker and her love in the ‘80s, Robert Downey Jr. The Iron Man star was invited for dinner and Parker says it was “surprisingly not weird.”. A-ha! So she WAS expecting it to maybe be weird. However, despite the unusual situation they ended up in, sometimes it is good to revisit the past and rearrange some of the pieces. And Parker had, apparently, a good reason to do it.
“I always felt very affectionate toward him”, the 51-year-old actress confessed. “Were young and we broke up, but I never didn’t care about his well-being” she added. It seems that those feelings that you get after a split, of bitterness and resentment, were not experienced here. Or at least, that is what Parker remembers. “Fundamentally we’re sort of the same,” she continued. “The difference is he has a family and a wife and obviously his career is a massive thing, but it was completely familiar.”
Parkes gives a lot of credit to her ex when it comes to love and relationships and even family. She said Downey Jr. taught her how to love and how to care for another person in a grown-up way. Maybe it taught me a little bit about being a parent too,” the Divorce actress continues explaining that the way she cared for her troubled ex-boyfriend was the same way a parent care about kids.
Not all ex-boyfriends left good memories, though. Parker, who also reveals she has dated Nicholas Cage, lets us understand that that relationship did not end in the most amiable terms.
Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker started dating in 1984 after meeting on the set of Firstborn. Their romance ended in 1991, while Downey Jr. was hooked on drugs. He married singer Deborah Falconer one year after the split. They have one son, Indio Falconer Downey. The couple divorced in 2004. Parker married actor Matthew Broderick in 1997, to who she is married still. Downey married film producer Susan Levin in 2005 and they have two children together. Parker and Broderick have one son and twin daughters.
