23-year-old Miss France was crowned Miss Universe 2016 in this year’s pageant, held in the Phlippines, Associated Press reports.
On Monday, January 30, Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, received the Miss Universe crown in the annual pageant, which was organized in the Philippines this year. Mittenaere is 23-years-old and comes from a little town in the northern part of France called Lille. A dental student, she mentioned in her profile speech that if she were to be crowned, she would “advocate for dental and oral hygiene”. However, she wasn’t confident about winning, mentioning that she would be honored if she were among the three finalists.
Her final question was to name a failure they had during their lifetime and what they have learned from it. She told the audience and pageant host Steve Harvey that she has known several failures so far in her life, but did not get into details. As for the educational part of the answer, she said: “When you fail, you have to be elevated and you have to try again and keep going … I have failed before but for me this is the great first opportunity”.
The other two finalists were Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier and Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar. To the same question about failures, 25-year-old Pelissier replied that she was a survivor of the devastating earthquake which occurred in 2010 and has taken the lives of over 300,000 people. She felt like a failure “because I was not living my dreams …”. As for what she had learned from that experience, Miss Haiti continued: “I chose to be a very positive person, and learned a great lesson from it because if I am here today.”
Miss France received her crown from former Miss Universe Pia Wurtsbach, 27.
