Supermodel Tyra Banks is getting ready to host the show America’s Got Talent, now to its 12th season. NBC made the announcement weeks after former show host Nick Cannon shared he was quitting.
Back in February, America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon took to Instagram to inform his audience that he was quitting the show. The reason? He mentions threats of contract termination after he made some jokes on Stand Up, Don’t Shoot, a stand-up comedy routine he performed at the Ebony Repertory Theatre in South Central Los Angeles. The show airs on Showtime.
According to the comedian, some NBC members believed his jokes “disparaged their brand.” Talking to ET, Cannon detailed his walking away from the show. “[People] get caught in a sense of like, ‘You should be happy to be here,’ or, ‘It is the dream job”, he says, explaining that those views don’t define him. He also added that his departure from the show was well thought, “calculated”.
On Sunday, March 12, NBC announced that the upcoming 12th Season of America’s Got Talent will be hosted by a reality show veteran, Tyra Banks.
Having created, hosted and acting as a judge in the reality competition America’s Next Top Model, 43-year-old Banks is the Simon Cowell of the modelling world. (Speaking of nothing, Cowell IS and WILL remain involved in the show, as a judge, until 2019.) She has also hosted a number of television projects, among which The Tyra Banks Show (from 2005 to 2010) and FABLife (2015).
“Tyra is the complete package: Out-of-this-world talented, funny, brilliant and all heart. In whatever she has done, she has always connected with audiences around the world” NBC’s Paul Telegdy said in a statement, adding that the model and television personality’s vivacious spirit will infuse AGT in a big way.”
