George Michael’s anxiety attacks caused the cancellation of his tour in Australia, Reuters informs. The singer explains that he needs therapy to deal with anxiety issues that remained unresolved after being treated for a life-threatening illness last year.
In November 2011, George Michael fell ill while in Vienna and was admitted to the hospital for four weeks. Even though the nature of his illness was not disclosed, it was stated that it was life-threatening.
After being released, the doctors recommended the 49-year-old musician a lot of rest. But, as he recently said in a statement, “I’m afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself.”
The “Careless Whisper” singer confessed that since he had left Vienna, last year in December, he has been overwhelmed by a feeling of anxiety that he tried to fight by being present on stage and in the studio. But his efforts in this direction were “in vain”. He added that he sees himself forced to postpone the tour in Australia and apologized to his fans:
“All that’s left for me to do is apologize to my wonderful Australian fan base”, George Michael said, promising them “faithfully” that “as soon as I completed these shows here in the UK, I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue.”
All the tickets to his concerts in Australia will be refunded.
