A 31-year-old nun from the Little Disciples of Jesus convent in Rieti, Italy wasn’t aware she was pregnant until her water broke and she was rushed to the hospital, on Wednesday. The stomach pains were another clue she was going into labor and after a few hours at the S. Camillo De Lellis hospital, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
“I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain”, says the nun and the community believe her. Local pastor Don Fabrizzio Borrello told the media: “I guess she’s telling the truth when she says she arrived at the hospital unaware of the pregnancy.” He added that she was planning on keeping the baby.
The nun, originally from El Salvador, named her son Francesco, after the title of the current pope. The new mother told a social worker about her decision of naming her child after the “wonderful south American Pope”, adding she feels more a mother than a nun. More than that, she said she wasn’t feeling guilty for the pregnancy.
According to The Christian Post, some people have already started mocking the event, calling it “another virgin birth”, as it is a known well fact that before becoming nuns, women take vows of obedience and chastity. Her fellow nuns were surprised by the news, as well.
The hospital is currently helping the new mother and son by collecting donations for them, the Italian media reports.
The mayor of Rieti, Simone Petrangeli, has asked the public to respect the nun’s privacy, but the media has already identified her as sister Roxana Rodriguez.
