Steam has released 12 games that you can play with the new HTC Vive, which will be available at the end of this month.
The new HTC Vive will be available for pre-order from the 29th of February. There’s still no mention of the price you will pay when the device ships, in April. But considering the Oculus Rift price controversy, HTC has most likely not decided on a price themselves. HTC are, at the very least, careful in not revealing a price before it’s definitely decided.
Part of what makes most of these Steam VR launch titles work is that there’s no learning curve. Thanks to the Vive’s motion controller and Valve’s lighthouse laser tracking tech, interacting in VR is pretty much like interacting in normal life.
If you want to go somewhere you walk there. If you want to pick something up, you grab it, not by physically closing your hand, but by pulling a trigger.
In games like Space Pirate Trainer, you dodge the incoming enemy attack drone lasers by simply dodging and ducking.
In Arizona Sunshine, you raise your arm, and the virtual gun it holds, to defend yourself against the charging zombies.
In Cloudlands VR Minigolf, you simply swing a club instead of managing swing-power meters.
There are still rules and limitations to the games. Moving down a virtual hallway is quite impossible if your couch or table is right in front of you.
Games like Budget Cuts and The Gallery solves that by teleportation mechanics. For Budget Cuts this manifests as an in-game portal gun, while The Gallery uses fade cuts to get you to the new location.
We don’t know how much Vive will cost, or which VR headset will reign supreme at the end of the year, but if you go for the HTC Vive, you know that you at least have a dozen top notch games to entertain yourself with.
