The Fences first trailer is out since yesterday and is closing up in 100,000 views. This, just 19 hours from its release. The trailer features the main stars of the movie, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, who have starred in the 2010 Broadway revival of the play with the same name, originally played in 1983.
Every once in a while, you see a trailer like Fences, that impresses your skin to the last pore; the kind of trailer that touches sensitive spots in the collective consciousness and brings to the surface the noblest struggles of the human condition.
Fences tells the story of a black family living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and having to deal with the social circumstances of the mid ‘50s, when the skin color barrier has not been broken in most social fields, including the Major League Baseball field. Troy, the main character, is a 53-year old man who works for a garbage collecting company, after having done some time for an accidental murder during a robbery. In his young years, he had been a baseball player.
In the trailer, you see one of Troy’s sons being given a hard lecture by his father because of what he believes is the reason why he is getting a roof over his head and food and clothes and all the other necessary things for a child.
“Don’t you go through life worrying whether somebody like you or not, you best be making sure that they’re doing right by you”, Washington concludes the lecture to his son.
Fences was written by Augustin Wilson as part of a series of ten plays called The Pittsburgh Cycle. It premiered in 1983 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. In 1987, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. That same year, Fences premiered on Broadway.
In 2010, the revival of the play starred Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, the same actors that have been cast – to play the same roles – in the movie.
Fences will premiere on December 25 of this year. Check out the trailer below:
