Jason Derulo reports a humiliating experience with American Airlines. The musician talked to People about the embarrassment he had to go through and the verbal abuse he’s been subjected to by American Airlines employees.
Jason Derulo was preparing to get comfortable on a plane seat when he received a call from one of the people he was travelling with that he can’t have all the bags checked. From that moment on, things went downhill. Here is the story that Derulo told People.
The 27-year-old hip hop artist was on a plane from Miami to Los Angeles. He was accompanied by a group of friends and he had boarded the plane, leaving one person to catch the next flight, with the most part of their luggage. Before takeoff, he receives a call from the person he left behind, telling him that he can’t check the remaining bags, more precisely 19 pieces of baggage, for free. “We’d never paid for our bags because of our status—with all of our miles”, he explains. The sum charged for all 19 bags was $4,000, a sum that Derulo considered “obviously a huge sum”. “We were like, ‘No, we’re not paying that. We’ve got to turn the plane around.’”
At that point, the plane, Flight 275, turned back to the gate, letting Derulo & Co out. According to a statement from American Airlines, “a passenger elected to deplane in order to travel with their checked bags” and he has been booked on an evening flight.
What set Jason Derulo off was the attitude he got from the pilot. He says that he was called “delinquent” and the pilot acted like he was the one kicking them off the plane. Derulo reacted: “I was like, ‘Listen, sir, you’re not going to talk down to me; I’m not your son. Don’t talk to me in that tone of voice.’”
Moreover, when he and his group of friends stepped off the plane and back into the airport, they were met by 15 police officers. “So I pick up my phone, and I go live on my Instagram.” The rapper says their attitude changed the second they found out who he was. “Every single person becomes somebody else, and all of a sudden, we’re not in trouble anymore.” Derulo added that he wants everyone to be treated respectfully and get what they pay for, nothing more, nothing less.
According to People, the Miami police reported a different version of the events. Their report includes mentions of Derulo & Co smelling of marijuana and “getting aggressive”. Moreover, they were not cooperative with the police, refusing to give their IDs.
