Here is the latest on Angelina Jolie’s problems: a man from Cambodia claims to be the father of Jolie’s son Maddox.

51-year-old Mounh Sarath, an aid charity director from Cambodia, says that he put himself as the father of Maddox Jolie-Pitt, on the papers that actress Angelina Jolie needed for the adoption process, back in 2003. According to The Sun, the man claims he still has power of attorney over the boy.

The publication says that Sarath showed papers confirming he was still legally the father of Maddox, now 15-years-old. He explained that he agreed to be listed as the father of the boy in order for Jolie to be able to speed the process of adopting the baby. “She had to change his name, so the only way was for me to do it. I said he’s my son”, he told The Sun, adding that he met the Hollywood actress while doing charity work. The actress was allegedly supposed to take care of details later, including removing his name from her son’s papers, but he says it didn’t happen. “In court documents, Maddox is still my son. She never cleared this up.”

During the time when the actress – and her then-boyfriend, actor Billy Bob Thornton – were planning to adopt Maddox, The United States were tightening restrictions on adoptions from Cambodia due to rising concerns on trafficking.

Angelina Jolie did not comment on Sarath’s allegations. Moreover, she says she went “through great lengths” to look for Maddox’s birth mother before making the steps to adopt him. “I would never rob a mother of her child. I can only imagine how dreadful that would feel”.

Jolie, who has six children in total – three adopted and three that she gave birth to – stressed that she did not break the law, on the contrary: “Personally, I prefer to stay on the right side of the law. I would never take a child away from a place where adoption is illegal.”

The adoption process of Maddox was handled by agent Lauryn Galindo, who later spent a year and a half behind bars for falsifying names, dates and places of birth of several children in Cambodia during adoption processes.

However, there is no evidence to sustain that either Angelina Jolie, or Billy Bob Thornton, were aware of any illegal activities in the adoption of Maddox.

Earlier this year, the birth mother of another of Jolie’s kids started speaking with the press, saying she wanted to reconnect with the child. Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, who gave birth to Zahara, said in an interview for Daily Mail: “I just want her to know that I am alive and here and long to be able to speak with her.”
