The death of Heath Ledger, on January 22, 2008, shocked many. Not only family and fans, but also people from the film industry who had worked with him, people who knew about him and the global population to an extent. The Associated Press reported that the actor’s death was the most searched subject in the entertainment sector throughout the whole 2008.

Heath Ledger was found unresponsive, in his bed, in his Manhattan apartment, by his housekeeper and his masseuse. Paramedics, who arrived at the scene only 7 minutes later, were unsuccessful at reviving him and pronounced him dead 36 minutes after he was found by the two women.

Toxicology reports show that Ledger died accidentally from a prescription overdose, which included oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine.

The movies that put Heath Ledger on the map – or that he put on our map are:

  • 10 Things I hate About You (1999)
  • Monster’s Ball (2001)
  • The Brothers Grimm (2005)
  • Brokeback Mountain (2005)
  • Casanova (2005)
  • The Dark Knight (2008)
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

In the documentary that is to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, Heath Ledger is seen through the eyes of some of the people closest to him. Kate Ledger, his sister, Christina Cauchi, his girlfriend at the time of his death, Ben Harper, his friend, and Ang Lee, the director of Brokeback Mountain, are some of the people who described the actor on the I am Heath Ledger trailer.

Harper said that Ledger was “the most alive human”, interested only in things that were “on the edge”. Cauchi recalls that The Dark Knight star was obsessed with immortalizing life, either through video or photography. “That’s the only way I think of him: with the camera in the hand”. Ang Lee talks about “the power of Heath Ledger”, referring to his ability to steal the show, even from the spot of a supporting role.

I Am Heath Ledger will air on Spike on May 17.
