Swift’s new song, “Look What You Made Me Do” has already passed 4 million views and 450,000 liked on YouTube. People definitely like the singer’s incisive and vengeful attitude, that she portrays in the lyrics. The song continues the approach from “Bad Blood”.
“Look”starts with the lyrics:
“I don’t like your little games
I don’t like your tilted stage
The role you made me play: of the fool
No, I don’t like you.”
“You asked me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast.
The world moves on another day
But not for me.
All I think is karma.”
Then at one point she says, like talking on the phone: “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now,” she says. “Why? Oh, ‘cause she’s dead.”
Swift does not mention Kanye’s name, but the lyrics channel the long-lasting beef with the hip hop artist.
Kanye West first stepped on Taylor Swift’s nerves back in 2009, at the VMA, when he interrupted her acceptance speech to laud the performance of Beyoncé, who lost to Swift that evening. “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”, West said. He was booed off the stage and everyone, including the U.S. President, thought his behaviour was that of a “jackass”.
Next year, after West apologized, Swift debuted “Innocent”, a song about their feud, on a condescending tone. The rapper retracted his apology and claimed their beef helped Swift’s audience and sales.
In 2015, Taylor presented Kanye with the Video Vanguard Award, but tensions were still there.
Last year, Kanye West released “Famous”, which includes the lyrics:
“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/
Why? I made that bitch famous/
Goddamn, I made that bitch famous.”
The video features a number of nude celebrity replicas, including one of Taylor Swift, resting right next to the Kanye West replica.
“Look What You Made Me Do” will be featured on Swift’s upcoming album Reputation.
