In an interview for In Style, Selena Gomez opens-up about rehab, a 3-month break from the spotlight that, she explains, benefited her greatly. Although this occurred this time last year, the 25-year-old hasn’t gone public with any details.
In 2016, Selena Gomez cancelled her Revival tour and checked herself into a treatment facility in Tennessee. The singer has been open about her reason from day one. “As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,”, she told People in a statement, adding that in her case, she developed crippling anxiety and depression. “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”
Talking to In Style’s Laura Brown, Selena admits that going away for 90 days was “the best thing that I ever could’ve done.”. She details: “I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared”. But the experience taught her “a lot”. And by that, she means: “Everything I cared about, I stopped caring about. I came out, and it felt like, “OK, I can only go forward.”
As for her days there at a more practical level, Gomez says that she never did her hair while there and she took part in equine therapy.
And even though she admits rehab was hard, coming back into the public eye was the real challenge. When I came out, I was asked to go to the American Music Awards, and everyone around me was like, “Do whatever makes you comfortable.” She decided to attend but, she says it was overwhelming. “I felt like my back was sweating.”
Selena Gomez is still in therapy and reveals the most work is focused on her insecurities. “Because of social media, because of all the pressure that girls have, it’s so difficult. […] It’s very hard to find out who you are during all that mess and pressure.”
Her romantic life is also back on track. Gomez admits she is really happy in her relationship with boyfriend Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd. “You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else”.

Coincidentally or not, one year after Selena cancelled her tour to take time off and recharge her batteries mentally and physically, ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber does the same. The pop star recently penned a letter to his fans, explaining he needs a deep cleansing cure from all the toxicity he got from his “broken relationships”.
