VMA 2017 recap: Here are the highlights of music stars Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lorde at the event, aired on August 27, from Inglewood, California.
Katy Perry comes from outer space – the VMA 2017 host, pop star Katy Perry, made her appearance in an astronaut costume, commenting on the world’s latest. After joking about today’s fashion – holding an outfit from The Handmaid’s Tale – Perry, who has her own fashion business – was handed today’s paper, which featured, on the cover the title “The World is on Fire.” Wasn’t it weird that Perry did not antagonize Trump this time? Not directly anyway, but he might have been the unmentioned reason that the world was on fire and that she was getting ready to leave Earth.
Taylor Swift premieres “Look What You Made Me Do” video – the singer released the audio version on August 24 and it reached over 4 million views in the first 12 hours. It has currently passed 40 million. Last night, at the VMA 2017, she premiered the video clip. It was later uploaded on YouTube and it reached 13 million views in the first 7 hours.
In the video, Swift channels her personas over the years – the country singer from “Teardrops on My Guitar”, the nerd from “You Belong to Me”, the “Shake It Off” ballet dancer, the VMA diva whose speech was interrupted by nemesis Kanye West.
Even though it was speculated that Swift’s song may be about her feud with Kanye West, she did not address the matter – or the person – at all. Some publications say she came close to it at the end, when one of her personas said: “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative”. Coincidentally or not, it was the VMA recipient.
Lorde had odd performance, but she was sick – the singer did not sing. She did not even lip-sync. She did not have a choreography. As Katy Perry later described it, “Lorde did Lorde stuff”. It was an odd, uncontrolled performance of on the audio of her song “Homemade Dynamite”. The singer later tweeted that she was feeling very ill. “You can’t tell in these pictures but i have the flu so bad i needed an IV #showgoeson #cutelilproppedupcorpse 🦄💀”
