Nick Carter was accused of rape by singer Melissa Schuman, who claims their intimate moments over 15 years ago were not consensual. His reaction? Read below.
Pop singer Melissa Schuman, now 33 years of age, alleges that Backstreet Boys’ sunny boy Nick Carter raped her when she was just 18-years-old. At that time, he was 22.
Schuman shared the story on her blog, Melissa Explains It All, under the title “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anybody”. After revealing that for many years she thought she would have to carry the burden of silence forever, the singer wrote: “The first time I met my abuser wasn’t the first time the abuse occurred.”
They met when she was filming “This Is Me Remix” music video with the girl band she was in, called DREAM. Carter, whose name she does not mention for a good part of the story, showed a romantic interest in her and wanted to “arrange a chat over the phone”. As she was not single, things didn’t go anywhere.
A few years later, single and interested to hangout with Carter and his friends at his Santa Monica apartment. “This wasn’t a crazy house party, just a casual hangout”, she wrote.
Things changed when they went into his office to listen to new music he had been working on and they started to kiss. “He was aware that I was a virgin and that I held to religious conservative christian values. I was vocal about this.” She said he did not care about this, he took her into the nearest bathroom, locked the door and raped her. “I wanted to believe it was some sort of nightmare I was dreaming up.”
The story shared by Melissa Schuman, in the light of the Harvey Weinstein accusations which broke out earlier this month, left Carter in shock. “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual”, he told People, adding that as they went t record a song together, he was always respectful and supportive of her, on a personal and a professional level.
“This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”
