Rihanna now has a street in Barbados named after her – Rihanna Drive. And not just any street, but the one she grew-up on, in Bridgetown.
Last Thursday, singer Rihanna was honored in her hometown, Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, by having a street named after her. Rihanna Drive is the former Westbury New Road, a place where RiRi made a lot of memories during her childhood years.
The Grammy winner shared several photos on Instagram, from the memorable event. She showed-up in a bright yellow shirt-dress with oversized sleeves, which she paired with gold jewelry and cat-eye sunglasses.
Looking fabulous, the Barbadian beauty greeted the people in Bridgetown who came to see her and celebrate with her this unique moment.
“A day my people and I will never forget”, she started the lengthy caption on one of the Instagram pics. She continued by counting all the memories she had on that very street: “all the lessons, running around barefoot, nosey neighbors, braiding hair on the step, playing in the cemetery, walking to the beach, rum shop karaoke keeping the whole street awake til 4am […] rushing to do dishes when my mother’s high heels start hitting the pavement as she gets off the bus from work……right here on this street!”
She continued: “WESTBURY is more than a community, we’re family!!! Thank you for all that you’ve poured into my life and the woman I am! It takes a village, and I’m glad my village was you!!!! To God be the Glory!!!! “
a day my people and I will never forget! all the lessons, running around barefoot, nosey neighbors, braiding hair on the step, playing in the cemetery, walking to the beach, rum shop karaoke keeping the whole street awake til 4am ("only the lonely" by Roy Orbison is playing in my head as I type this) , stealing Sammy pomegranates from his tree, begging my mother to let me walk to Jan's shop cause she had American snacks, selling plastic/glass bottles to Peter so I could buy those American snacks, getting my hair hot combed for Harvest at church, doing my homework on my front step while Miss Hyacinth yells "ya gon get belly hurt from dat cold step" across from her veranda, watching iFE walk past with her dreads dragging on the floor like a couture gown, all the times I thought Melissa came to hang out with me, turns out she was dating my next door neighbor all along, rushing to do dishes when my mother's high heels start hitting the pavement as she gets off the bus from work……right here on this street! WESTBURY is more than a community, we're family!!! Thank you for all that you've poured into my life and the woman I am! It takes a village, and I'm glad my village was you!!!! To God be the Glory!!!! #RiRiDrive
She then posted a photo of the street sign bearing her name, captioning it: “on any block.”
Rihanna Drive is just the latest in a number of streets which had their named changed to celebrities names, in their honor. The multi-talented Bob Hope (actor, dancer, singer, author, vaudevillian, athlete) has two streets named after him: one in Burbank, California and one in Ranchi Mirage, California. And Nirvana drummer and singer Dave Grohl has a street bearing his name, in his hometown of Warren, Ohio.
