Actress Amy Schumer made a shocking confession to Katie Couric. “I’ve been flat out raped”, the 36-year-old said.
This may or may not be breaking news, depending on whether or not you have gotten your hands of Amy Schumer’s memoir, The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo, released in July 2016. In the book, the comedienne talks about her first sexual experience and says it was not really consensual. But she has never been as concise as she was with Katie Couric on her Wonder Women podcast.
“I’ve been flat-out raped”, she said, adding that in the current climate, looking back at those past experiences, which she says all women she has known so far had, you realize “none of that was OK.”
Schumer said: “We’ve all – every woman I know, every woman in this room – we’ve all had these experiences [of sexual misconduct]”.
Back in August 2016, she talked about it with Marie Claire and told the magazine that she didn’t think about what had happened until she started reading her journal again.
The actress also brought-up the case of Aziz Ansari in order to make another point: “If you have a doctor that makes you uncomfortable, or you get a massage, or you have a date with someone and they coerce you in a situation like the Aziz one, I don’t think there’s any sort of criminal charge”, she said, “but I think that it’s good for everybody to learn that that behaviour’s not acceptable.”
Ansari was accused by a woman he went on a date with that he did not pick up on her cues, that she didn’t want things to go further and he persisted. The Master of Nothing star denied that was the case, explaining that it was, indeed, consensual.
“I think it’s about expressing and showing women that that behaviour is not okay and not only can you leave, but you need to leave”, added Schumer.
